Jane Vernon, Potter

Most of the designs I use regularly are shown in the thumbnails here. Each design is produced on a selection of items (rarely the whole range in any one design.) The thumbnails link to separate pages for each glaze or design, where you can see larger images and a list of the shapes usually produced in each design.

Although I began as a textile artist, I now spend the largest part of my working year as a potter.

The purpose of my ceramics work is to produce a range of practical and robust tableware suitable for daily use.

The function of the pot is the most important thing. Teapots must pour well, bowls should be a good size for a portion of cereal or soup, plates should have a deep rim to take plenty of gravy! All the pots can be used in the oven, dishwasher and freezer and (except for lustred pots) in the microwave, making them flexible for cooking and serving alike.

The pots are finished using several different glazes - blue, tenmoku, oatmeal, white, and cream. A small range of slips, oxides and colouring glazes are used to decorate and create various designs. As I hope the pots will be used every day I try to make them visually interesting but at the same time comfortable to live with.

In addition to general tableware I also make "beastly dishes" with sculpted handles in the shape of fish or lizards and "butterfly vases", with sculpted butterflies perching on the pots. Click on the appropriate links to see these pots.

Among the other pottery pages available through the links are background information about my ceramics work and a slide show, "What goes into making a mug", which will take you through the process of clay to pot.

I make a wide variety of items in a number of designs but am always happy to discuss the possibility of extending the range of items if you would like something different.
