Lustred pots

The decoration on these three ranges of pottery comes closest to the style of my textiles work, with the repeated shapes and marks and metallic finish created with three different precious metal lustres. Lustre is also used on the blue slip design.

The metal is suspended in a viscous liquid, which is painted onto a finished, glazed pot. The pot is then refired to a low temperature (800 degC) and the liquid burns away, allowing the metal to fuse to the glaze. There is a think layer of metal, therefore, on the finished pot, which is why lustred pots should not be used in a microwave oven.
